Law+Art, August 2026

I used to run a blog about music and books called #TheMusics.

I continued (and continue) to read and listen to loads of books, and dive into new music and artists…but legal work got busy over the last years and took me away from this art blog, which is something I really loved doing. 

Well, I'm back! Now that I'm running my solo practice again, I'm taking the quiet time to enjoy drafting this on a monthly basis. 

I'm baking it into my monthly legal firm newsletter and posting it as #Law+Art on my website blog as another way to combine the art of being a trial lawyer with the art of being musician and overall curious person (and yes, I'm thinking of the Ted Lasso dart season from S1, Ep8 as I write that comment about being curious!). 

There is definitely a performance piece to what we do as trial lawyers. It's not performance in the sense of trying to over-perform or over-sell a story. But rather, an awareness to if and how our audience is connecting to and reacting to what we're showing (performing). This audience is usually jurors and judges, but can also be opposing counsel, adjusters, etc., so we can best act for our clients to seek justice. 

This is a blend of my music background, my general curious nature, and also my love of education, learning, and connecting with my audience (both as a musician and as a former school teacher). I love this art, and I love talking about it and sharing it. I hope you'll join this journey with me and share your thoughts, feelings, and gifts as well.

Books and Music:

I'm a constant consumer of books, and with my music background, new music. Below is what I've read and listened to recently:

Books:

Take Me to Your Leader: Perspectives on Your First Alien Encounter, by

Neil deGrasse Tyson. I love how Dr. Tyson makes science so open, curious, and fun. Speaking of being curious, this takes me to the dart scene of Ted Lasso, S1, Ep8 where Ted talks about caring for others by way of being curious. Epic and lovely.

Brothers: An Intimate Account of Brotherhood and Rock Music, by Alex Van Halen. I'll admit, outside of the drum track for "Hot for Teacher", I've never much connected with Van Halen. This book changed that. I love hearing how much joy and care for which Alex describes his upbringing alongside his brother to create the music they did.

Currently reading:

Dirtbag Billionaire: How Yvon Chouinard Built Patagonia, Made a Fortune, and Gave It All Away, David Gelles. This has been so far an amazing journey for how Yvon Chouinard built his company, to then give it all away. It's a nice reflection of what it means to be a part of this world and universe, alongside the business of life.

Music:

Smoove Vibes, Warren Wolf. Wolf is a wonderful vibraphonist and percussionist, and a talented composer. This is a nice album.

Atlanta, Gnarls Barkley, CeeLo Green, Danger Mouse. To me Barkley/Green is one of our greatest songwriters. This album continues to prove that. Especially with the music and lyrics of "Pictures".

Currently checking out:

Duets, by Ron Carter & Yotam Silberstein. Ron Carter is always a yes for me. It's so inspiring how he's still creating after several lifetimes of making so much art.
